A new kind of urban market. B.Arch III Design Studio. Supervisor: Zdravko Trivic, PhD. Year: 2018. |
Synopsis
Black Market is a proposed market place within Jalan Besar – along the empty field which once housed the former Sungei Road Thieves Market. The name of the project was to reflect on the roots of the Sungei Road market where merchants used to sell stolen items at the venue. Through intensive research and interviews conducted amongst the residents, it concludes that there was a demand for a formal venue where the former Sungei Road merchants could sell their goods without having to go against authorities. By proposing the idea of a second-hand market place at the former venue, it not only tackles the issue of the buy-and-throw-away culture that has been inculcated into Singaporeans, while also diving into the nostalgic memories of the older generations to be familiar with the concept of the marketplace. With the proposed market, it allows social integration between all Singaporean locals regardless of social classes, and the indian migrant community who would visit the market to look for cheap or vintage items. With such social opportunities, this project aims to facilitate stronger social bonds through common interests. Site Former Sungei Road Thieves Market, Singapore. |
